Multimodality, Material Science, and Speed: Leveraging AM for Advanced Medical Imaging and R&D
Location: Tech Theatre
Day & Time: Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 10:05 – 10:50 am
Join Dr. Benjamin Cox (Phantech Medical) and Ryan Nelson (Stratasys Direct) to learn how additive manufacturing accelerates medical imaging and R&D. They'll present a case study on how Phantech Medical used AM to develop a multimodal phantom, providing a roadmap for leveraging advanced materials and certified partners to bring complex models to market faster.
Ryan Nelson is the Supervisor of Fulfillment Services for Stratasys Direct Manufacturing, a leading service provider of additive and conventional manufacturing in the United States. He oversees a cross-functional team of engineers, administrators, and Project Managers that ensure 3D printed projects are made accurately, and to requirements, from initial order to final delivery. Before this role, Ryan assisted clients in manufacturing their designs using additive and conventional manufacturing technologies. Ryan has six years in additive manufacturing, working in programming, printing, and machine operation of FDM, SLA, and SLS 3D printing technology. His interest and experience with additive manufacturing began during his college years and then evolved into a full-time career. Ryan holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University.
Ben Cox, PhD, is a Co-Founder of Phantech, a manufacturer of imaging phantoms for both preclinical and clinical imaging systems. He also serves as Senior Manager of Intellectual Property at the University of Chicago, where he evaluates inventions from campus research and manages a diverse patent portfolio for the university. Prior to joining UChicago, Ben was a postdoctoral fellow in the Medical Engineering Group at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, WI, working on novel medical device development with campus area clinicians. During his postdoctoral fellowship, he also served as Associate Lecturer in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, teaching undergraduate design courses. He holds a PhD in medical physics from the University of Wisconsin, as well as undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Biochemistry.
